Poor Patch Management

September 21, 2020
Poor Patch Management

System patching takes time and resources to manage. According to Ponemon, over 50% of data security breaches occur due to poor patch management. Which is astounding because that is 100% preventable. Add to this that the average cost of a data breach in 2020 so far is $3.86 Million. With all the threats seeking out unsecured and unpatched systems it is simply a matter of time.

Companies that transition from traditional on-prem systems to Cloud-based systems enjoy the benefits of the Shared Responsibility Model. There are six Security domains of traditional IT responsibility; Data, Applications, OS, Virtualization, Infrastructure and Physical domains. Depending on how far a company wishes to implement a Cloud strategy, the responsibility for any of those domains can shift towards the Cloud provider. This means that system patching for Operating Systems, Applications, OS, Virtualization, Infrastructure and Physical domains shifts away from the company freeing valuable resources to focus on the business.
